How TPMS actually works

Most vehicles built since the mid-2000s use direct TPMS: a small battery-powered sensor mounted inside each wheel that measures actual air pressure and transmits it to a receiver in the vehicle. When a sensor's battery dies, when a sensor is damaged (often during a tire change by someone not equipped to handle them), or when sensors aren't relearned to the vehicle after a tire swap, the system can't read pressure correctly and defaults to a warning light — even if your tires are perfectly fine. That's why a light that won't clear after you've checked and corrected your tire pressure usually points to the sensor system itself, not the tires.

When TPMS service is typically needed

• After a new tire installation — sensors from the old tires (or brand-new sensors, if yours were replaced) need to be paired and relearned to the vehicle's system
• After a rotation, on vehicles where the system tracks which sensor is in which position — moving tires without a relearn can make the dashboard display show the wrong tire as low
• When a sensor battery has simply died and the warning light won't clear no matter how you adjust pressure
• After a pothole or wheel impact that may have physically damaged a sensor
• When the light comes on with no clear pressure problem — this is the scenario where a proper diagnostic scan saves you from guessing

Does the TPMS light mean my tire is actually low right now? Not necessarily. It can mean low pressure, but just as often it means a sensor battery has died, a sensor was damaged, or the system needs to be relearned after a tire change. That's exactly what the diagnostic scan is for.

I just got new tires somewhere else and now the light won't turn off — can you fix that? Yes — this is one of the most common calls we get. It usually means the sensors weren't relearned to the vehicle during the installation, and we can run that relearn procedure on-site.
